In order to combat vehicular pollution and promote academic recycling and disposal of end-of-life vehicles, Bengaluru’s transportation department has abandoned 14, 042 used cars over the past three years.
The state government introduced the car scrapping policy in December 2022 as a result of concerns about the growing number of older vehicles on Bengaluru’s routes. Between September 1, 2023 and July 31, 2026, the department reported that 14, 042 cars had been scrapped through authorized car scrapping centers.
9 976 of the cars that were disposed of under the scheme were privately owned, and 3 390 were government-owned. According to the statistics, the organized replacing mechanism has previously removed a sizable number of older vehicles from the street system.
Authorities cars that are older than 15 years older are required to be discarded in accordance with the policy. However, private vehicle owners can deliberately sell their used cars for scrapping at approved locations.
The Transport Department offers tax breaks to car users to encourage them to choose to scrape when they buy new cars after disposing of their old ones. Users who replace two-wheelers can benefit from agreements ranging from Rupees 10, 000 to Rupees 50, 000 while those who replace them you get tax benefits ranging from Rupees 1, 000 to Rs 5, 000.

Officials claim that the plan is intended to remove outdated cars from routes as well as establish a method for recycling them in an environmentally responsible manner. End-of-life cars must be destroyed before recyclable parts and metals can be recovered for recycling.
But, users of vehicles have sought more effective ways to speed up the process. Some have urged the government to consider requiring the authorities to scrape cars that have been in use for at least 15 or 20 years, citing Delhi’s limits on the sale of older cars.
With Bengaluru seeing a steady rise in car registrations, economic concerns relating to older vehicles are also receiving focus. The Transport Department is thus attempting to persuade owners to deliberately phase out old vehicles while promoting the use of approved scrapping services.
The government anticipates that more people will be involved in the policy to reduce the number of outdated and possibly harmful vehicles on city streets and promote the recovery and reuse of vehicle materials.
