A Barbie doll meant to celebrate the idea that girls can do anything has sparked controversy after a shopper claimed to have spotted what appeared to be Nazi salutes among the miniature spectators printed on its packaging. Ana Elizabeth, a content creator on TikTok, said she made the discovery while browsing a CVS pharmacy store in the US. The doll, part of Mattel’s “You Can Do Anything” collection, is dressed in a gymnastics leotard and comes with ribbons and batons.

At first glance, the packaging appears to depict an ordinary sporting event. But Elizabeth drew attention to the blue-hued figures in the stands behind the gymnast, arguing that some appeared to have their arms raised in a gesture resembling the Nazi salute.

Her video has since triggered a debate online, with viewers divided over whether the figures depict an offensive historical reference or simply a crowd cheering at a sporting event.

WHAT IN THE LITERAL HELL: VIDEO SPARKS OUTRAGE

Elizabeth shared the clip on TikTok, highlighting the figures in the background and drawing attention to what she considered disturbing imagery.

She also overlaid the video with Weit Ist Der Weg Zurck Ins Heimatland, a German song dating to 1931 that was later adopted as a Nazi marching song after Adolf Hitler came to power.

Her caption added a sarcastic twist to the controversy: “She better win the Olympics, cause her coach will be heil-y disappointed.”

Several viewers echoed her concerns, questioning how such imagery could appear on a mass-market toy’s packaging.

“Literally what else could that be? That’s crazy,” one commenter wrote. Another called for a boycott of Mattel, the company behind Barbie.

A third questioned the design process, arguing that a company of Mattel’s scale would have multiple teams responsible for reviewing products and preventing such imagery from slipping through.

NOT EVERYONE IS CONVINCED

The video also attracted scepticism, with some users arguing that the figures could simply be spectators raising their arms to cheer the gymnast.

One commenter pointed out that several of the miniature figures appeared to have both arms raised, suggesting that the scene might depict a celebratory crowd rather than a Nazi salute.

Others dismissed the interpretation as an overreaction, with one user describing it as “reaching”.

The debate has centred on the ambiguity of the tiny figures in the printed background, with viewers interpreting the same visual details in sharply different ways.

MATTEL FACES QUESTIONS OVER PACKAGING

This is not the first time Mattel has faced criticism over a Barbie doll in recent weeks. Last week, the toy-maker unveiled its first official Hanukkah Barbie as part of its Holiday Sweaters collection, alongside two Christmas-themed dolls. Priced at USD 28, the Hanukkah edition wears a cobalt-blue sweater featuring a menorah, dreidels, snowflakes and Stars of David, paired with blue checkered leggings and miniature boots.

However, the doll’s facial features have also drawn scrutiny, with some social media users questioning the shape of its nose and arguing that it resembles stereotypes historically used to depict Jewish people. Others welcomed the doll as a step towards greater representation, with people who sying Barbie’s Jewish founder, Ruth Handler, would have been delighted by the release.

The two episodes have brought renewed attention to how details in Barbie’s design, from facial features to background imagery, can spark sharply different reactions. Mattel has not responded to the latest controversy yet.
