The first woman-led film from the YRF Spy Universe opened to mixed reviews, but still drew enough audience curiosity on its first day. Its India gross stood at Rs 11.10 crore, while the overseas gross was Rs 5 crore, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 16.10 crore.
Alpha has also registered the third-best opening for a woman-led Bollywood film in India, after Veere Di Wedding and Alia’s own Gangubai Kathiawadi. It collected the same as Crew on Day 1, at Rs 9.25 crore. The film sold 224K tickets on its opening day and recorded strong late-night occupancy in major cities, giving it a base ahead of the Saturday and Sunday footfalls.
All eyes will now be on the film’s weekend performance to see if it can sustain its opening-day momentum. Its domestic earnings, coupled with overseas collections, will determine how quickly it recovers its costs and progresses towards profitability.
Meanwhile, India Today gave Alpha a 2.5-star rating in its review and highlighted Alia’s performance as Sita in the film. A part of the review read, “That unevenness becomes Alpha’s biggest problem. The film keeps piling on twists, and while a few works, the constant barrage eventually becomes exhausting. Instead of building intrigue, the screenplay focusses more on building shock value.” Directed by Shiv Rawail and written by Uday Chopra, Alpha released on July 3. It is the seventh film in YRF’s Spy Universe and also features Sharvari, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Dia Mirza in key roles.
