Australia is looking to deepen its engagement with India’s rapidly expanding space sector as the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) leads a delegation of 12 Australian space companies and institutions to the ninth edition of the Bengaluru Space Expo (BSX) 2026.
The delegation, led by Austrade, includes companies working across launch and re-entry technologies, Earth observation, satellite systems, debris management, advanced manufacturing and space research, alongside three Australian universities.

Speaking ahead of and during the Bengaluru Space Expo, Nathan Davis, Trade and Investment Commissioner at Austrade, said the delegation reflects the growing depth of the Australia-India space corridor.
“Australia and India have increasingly complementary capabilities,” Davis said, stressing that the focus was on identifying areas where the two ecosystems could work together rather than compete.
Australia is participating as the technology country partner at BSX 2026, being held in Bengaluru from September 7 to 9. The event comes as India’s private space sector continues to expand, with more than 400 space-tech startups now operating in the country.
Davis said Australia’s delegation brings together a diverse set of capabilities. These include companies working on launch and return systems, advanced Earth observation technologies, satellite surveillance and debris management, as well as advanced manufacturing and testing facilities.
One major area of potential collaboration is launch and re-entry. While India has developed significant launch capabilities, Davis said Australia could offer advantages through its vast open spaces, uncongested skies and developing ground infrastructure.
Australian companies are also exploring partnerships in additive manufacturing, satellite communications and Earth observation data and analytics.
The focus, Davis said, is on connecting Australian companies with specialised technologies to India’s rapidly growing industrial and startup ecosystem, helping develop stronger supply chains and commercially viable applications.
The relationship between the two countries is already gaining momentum.
At the Bengaluru Space Expo in 2024, Australian companies announced eight new partnerships with Indian organisations, following six MoUs signed in 2022. More than half a dozen Australian space companies have also established operations in India, according to Davis.
Beyond commercial cooperation, India and Australia are also expanding engagement in areas of strategic importance, including maritime security, Earth observation and space domain awareness.
Davis said the growing relationship would increasingly focus on shared challenges across the Indo-Pacific, as well as opportunities in civil space, industrial cooperation, launch and re-entry systems and space-enabled technologies.
“The seeds are there,” he said, expressing optimism about the future of bilateral cooperation. “I can’t wait to see the trees that blossom.”
