West Bengal police have detained five members of the same family in Murshidabad for allegedly crossing over from Bangladesh and residing in India illegally for a prolonged period.

According to police sources, the detained individuals are Ujir Ali (43), his wife Jainur Khatun (36), and their three sons, 15 years, 10 years, and 4.year old. Their ancestral home is in the Chapainawabganj district of Bangladesh.

During the preliminary investigation, police learned that Ujir Ali allegedly crossed the India-Bangladesh border illegally and entered India around 13 years ago. He later settled permanently in Sagardighi. To earn a livelihood, he reportedly worked as a mason in different parts of South India.

Investigators also found that he had purchased about 15 decimals of land in the area and built a house there.

Police claim that after arriving in India, Ujir Ali obtained a Voter ID card and an Aadhaar card using fraudulent documents. During interrogation, he told investigators that he had brought one son with him when he came from Bangladesh. He further stated that two more children were born while the family was living in India.

According to the investigation, the eldest son is currently studying in Class 8, while the second son is a Class 4 student.

Following an operation on Saturday, police detained all five family members and completed the necessary legal procedures. Authorities subsequently sent them to the holding centre in Ahiran.

Cops have launched a detailed investigation to determine how the family managed to live in India for such a long period and how government identity documents were allegedly obtained.
