Actor Ajith Kumar’s mother, Mohini Mani, was laid to rest at the Besant Nagar Electric Crematorium in Chennai on Sunday morning. The final rites were held in the presence of close family members, in keeping with the family’s wish for privacy after her death on Saturday.
The family had earlier said that Mohini Mani’s last rites would be a private family affair. She died in Chennai at the age of 85. The family said she died peacefully in her sleep after a period of declining health. Her death came nearly three years after the death of her husband, P Subramaniam.

Private farewell in Chennai
Videos from the crematorium showed an emotional Ajith with his wife Shalini during the final farewell. In another clip, he was seen folding his hands and thanking Chennai Police personnel for the security arrangements made for the funeral.
Ajith, who was in Dubai when he received the news, returned to Chennai on Saturday night to be with his family. At the crematorium on Sunday, he remained by his family’s side during the final rites.
Condolences pour in
On Saturday night, Vijay and Trisha Krishnan visited Ajith’s residence in Chennai to offer their condolences. Videos circulating on social media showed Vijay arriving at the house amid security and embracing Ajith before spending time with the bereaved family. Trisha was also seen at the residence, where she paid her respects and offered condolences to the family.
They were among several members of the film fraternity who reached out after Mohini Mani’s death. Kamal Haasan, Radhika Sarathkumar and others also expressed support for Ajith and his family following the loss of the family matriarch.
Family statement
In their statement, the family said, “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Mrs. Mohini Mani, who left us peacefully today at the age of 85.”
The statement, signed by her sons Anup Kumar, Ajith Kumar and Anil Kumar, described her as “the heart of our family” and said the values she instilled in them would continue to guide them.
