Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan faced backlash on social media after a video showed her refusing a tilak on her forehead at an event. The moment, captured during a public event, sparked debate online, with some users criticising her decision to decline the customary forehead mark.

The viral video showed Farah being welcomed traditionally at an event. As soon as the woman went ahead to apply tilak on her forehead, the Main Hoon Na director denied the same and politely asked for it to be placed on her hand. She accepted the tilak in that form, but the brief interaction soon drew widespread attention online.

Several social media users expressed displeasure over her refusal to follow the customary greeting, arguing that she should have accepted the tilak on her forehead. The clip was widely circulated, with some accounts framing the moment along communal lines and questioning her response to the ritual.

One of the X users wrote, “Farah Khan gets offended when a woman offers her a tika as a welcoming gesture. Imagine wearing nail polish, which is haram in Islam, but getting offended by a tika because nail polish is a style statement while tika is a Hindu tradition. Classic Bollywood so called celeb for you.” Another wrote, “So called liberal Bollywood director Farah Khan got offended when a woman offered to put teeka on her forehead. This is Ganga Jamuni tehzeeb.” A third user chimed in and wrote, “Why dis SECULAR Farah Khan refused to apply Tikka on forehead ??”

However, others came to Farah’s defence, saying she should be free to decide how she participates in a religious or cultural custom. They also questioned why an ordinary interaction had escalated into a controversy, arguing that personal choice and boundaries should be respected.

One of the users wrote, “She doesn’t prefer to be showered with flowers. It’s her choice. There’s nothing bad in it..we don’t know how her mood was that day or what she went through,” while another wrote, “Can’t force people to accept Hindu traditions we are free to choose whatever we want to.”

Meanwhile, Farah recently hosted Lock Upp: Sach ya Sazaa with Riteish Deshmukh.
