More than one million Qantas customers have been notified they could be eligible for a slice of a $105m class action claim.

The multi-million dollar payment will settle a flight credit class action against the airline over scheduled flights that were cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The class action claimed Qantas breached consumer law by issuing flight credits rather than refunds for cancelled flights within a reasonable time frame.

The Federal Court of Australia notified customers that Qantas agreed to pay $105m to settle the class action without admission of wrongdoing.

Customers who booked Qantas flights between January 1, 2020 and November 1, 2022, but were later cancelled, could be eligible for compensation.

“While the amount of your payment will depend on a number of different factors, under the proposed distribution each group member who meets the eligibility requirements below is guaranteed a minimum payment of $50,” customers were notified.

“Some group members will receive significantly more than this amount.”

Qantas customers who already used their flight credit or were refunded could still be eligible for a settlement payment.

“This is because the case included allegations that group members ought to have received a refund and not a flight credit, that there were delays in paying refunds and that, where customers used their flight credit, that this was not the same as receiving a refund,” a letter stated.

Customers must register their claim by 4pm on October 2 and will receive a minimum $50 payment if they meet the eligibility requirements.

The Federal Court will decide approvals and distribution to customers that register.
