Manchester United’s Premier League campaign got off to a nightmare start as Michael Carrick’s side were beaten 2-0 by newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium. United had entered the new season with renewed optimism after ending the previous campaign strongly under Carrick. However, that confidence quickly disappeared as Hull exposed the visitors’ weaknesses and produced a performance full of energy and intensity.

The hosts took the lead in the 17th minute after United failed to deal with a dangerous situation inside their own box. Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to the defensive lapse, finishing from close range to put Hull ahead.

United struggled to match Hull’s physicality and tempo, particularly when the home side attacked. The pressure continued to build, and Hull were rewarded with a second goal in the 38th minute. Nobel Mendy rose highest inside the box and sent a powerful header beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The issue seemed to be United’s lack of pace in defence with Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire and an ageing Luke Shaw failing to come to grips with the intensity from the Hull forward line.

With United desperately needing a response, Carrick turned to Marcus Rashford at half-time. The forward was making his first competitive appearance for the club in 618 days, but his return failed to spark the comeback United needed.

The visitors created very little after the break. Bryan Mbeumo came closest to getting United back into the contest, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis stood firm to deny his effort.

Ultimately, United never looked capable of mounting a serious comeback. Hull remained composed and largely untroubled, securing a convincing victory and leaving Carrick with plenty to address after a hugely disappointing opening day.

While they’re close to getting a deal done for Carlos Baleba from Brighton, the loss gives them a lot to ponder when it comes to defensive signings with the transfer window still open.
