After two years of coaching classes, mock tests, sleepless nights and one of the toughest entrance exams in the world, a JEE Advanced qualifier might think the hard part is over.
In reality, a different kind of challenge is just beginning.
Imagine a student who has always dreamed of studying Computer Science. When the JoSAA counselling portal opens, they discover they may have to choose between Computer Science at a newer IIT or a traditional branch like Civil, Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering at an older IIT with a stronger reputation.

The older IITs see intense competition for Computer Science Engineering seats, and are usually snapped up by some of the country’s highest-ranked candidates.
Another student may find themselves weighing IIT Bombay’s brand value against a preferred branch elsewhere. Someone else may be comparing faculty strength, research opportunities, startup culture, placements, campus life and even hostel facilities.
For everyone else, the JoSAA counselling season often becomes an exercise in compromise: Is it better to study the subject you’ve always wanted, or join a more prestigious IIT known for its brand, alumni network and placements, and hope the institute’s reputation opens doors later?
For the 56,880 candidates who qualified JEE Advanced 2026, the next few weeks will be filled with exactly these decisions.
It is no longer just about “Can I get into an IIT?” but also about “Which IIT, and at what cost?”
THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE COMPETITION
The squeeze becomes obvious when the numbers of availale seats and the number of students are placed side by side.
| Category | Number |
|---|---|
| JEE Advanced 2026 qualified candidates | 56,880 |
| IIT undergraduate seats (approx.) | 18,000–19,000 |
| Students who can get IIT seats | Around 1 in 3 |
| Students likely to explore other options | Around 2 in 3 |
Even among students who have cleared JEE Advanced, a large majority will eventually move towards NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and other institutions because there simply are not enough IIT seats available.
Here’s the seat distribution for JoSAA 2024:
|
Institute type |
Seats |
|---|---|
|
IITs |
17,740 |
|
NITs |
24,229 |
|
IIITs |
8,546 |
|
GFTIs |
9,402 |

Total JoSAA seats |
59,917 |
WHY THE IIT VS BRANCH DEBATE EXISTS
For years, many students followed a simple rule: get into the best IIT possible.
That calculation has changed.
The rise of software, AI, data science and quantitative finance has dramatically increased demand for coding-heavy programmes. Students today are often willing to choose a newer IIT if it offers a branch they truly want.
Recent JoSAA closing-rank trends show just how competitive these programmes have become.
Computer Science Engineering is the highest demand stream, and seats get filled for this branch in reputed IITs early.
Here are the most in-demand IITs and branches (JoSAA 2024, General category):
|
IIT |
Branch |
Closing rank |
|---|---|---|
|
IIT Bombay |
Computer Science Engineering |
68 |
|
IIT Delhi |
Computer Science Engineering |
116 |
|
IIT Madras |
Computer Science Engineering |
159 |
|
IIT Kanpur |
Computer Science Engineering |
250 |
|
IIT Kharagpur |

414 |
|
IIT Roorkee |
Computer Science Engineering |
481 |
|
IIT Guwahati |
Computer Science Engineering |
612 |
|
IIT Hyderabad |
Computer Science Engineering |
652 |
Now, check out the closing ranks for different branches in IIT Delhi (JoSAA 2024) – it shows the overall branch preference among IIT students:
|
Branch |
Closing rank |
|---|---|
|
Computer Science Engineering |
108 |
|
Mathematics & Computing |
182 |
|
Electrical Engineering |
520 |
|
Electrical (Power) |
565 |

|
Production & Industrial Engineering |
5,510 |
|
Biotechnology |
6,210 |
|
Textile Technology |
7,560 |
As seen in this table, the gap between coding-focused branches and traditional engineering streams has widened sharply.
Mathematics and Computing now attracts ranks far closer to Computer Science than to Mechanical Engineering, reflecting changing student priorities around software, AI, data science and technology careers.
A student who misses Computer Science by a small margin may suddenly find themselves choosing between a completely different branch at a top IIT and their preferred subject at another institute.
THE IITS STUDENTS CHASE THE MOST
While every IIT has its strengths, a handful continue to dominate student preference lists year after year.
In the table below of the most competitive IIT Computer Science programmes, all closing ranks are below 500:
|
Programme |
Approx closing rank (General) |
|---|---|
|
IIT Bombay CSE |
~66 |
|
IIT Delhi CSE |
~120 |
|
IIT Madras CSE |
~160 |
|
IIT Kanpur CSE |
~250 |
|
IIT Kharagpur CSE |
~400 |
These numbers help explain why students spend days analysing counselling data before locking their choices.
For many aspirants, securing Computer Science at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi remains among the toughest admissions in the country.
THE CLASS 12 MARKS CONFUSION
The JEE Advanced 2026 press release included a line that may have surprised some students.
It said all qualified candidates are encouraged to participate in JoSAA counselling “irrespective of the marks or percentage obtained in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination.”
However, the next sentence clarifies that “final seat confirmation/admission shall be subject to the candidate fulfilling the percentage related eligibility criteria.”
In simple terms, students should register for counselling even if board-related eligibility matters are still being resolved.
But final admission still depends on meeting the required Class 12 eligibility conditions.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Over the coming weeks, students will fill hundreds of preferences, compare cutoffs, seek advice from seniors and debate options with parents.
Some will choose an older IIT and an unfamiliar branch.
Others will choose a newer IIT for the subject they always wanted to study.
Both paths have produced successful engineers, entrepreneurs and researchers.
The JEE Advanced exam may be over.
Now comes the decision that could shape the next four years of their lives.
– Ends
