A controversy has erupted in Telangana after Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) workers carried out a symbolic “purification” of a Congress protest site using turmeric water near former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s farmhouse.

They described the exercise as ‘shuddhikaran‘, claiming the area had been “defiled” by the Congress protesters.

The BRS workers also raised slogans against Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

The development came a day after Congress leaders staged a ‘Dappula Mota’ (drum-beating) protest near KCR’s farmhouse in Erravelli, demanding an apology over alleged remarks by BRS MLC T Madhusudan against Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.

Madhusudan, however, denied making any derogatory remarks.

Congress and Dalit protesters marched towards the BRS chief’s farmhouse on Tuesday but were stopped by police before they could reach the premises.

Later that evening, Madhusudan and another BRS MLC, N Naveen Kumar Reddy, were arrested in connection with a case registered over the alleged remarks.

The issue also became a flashpoint in the Telangana Assembly on Wednesday, with 22 BRS MLAs suspended for the remainder of the Monsoon Session.

Among the suspended MLAs was BRS working president KT Rama Rao, who moved an adjournment motion over alleged police high-handedness against women members and death threats against KCR.

The BRS members resorted to sloganeering and protesting while demanding a discussion. As chaos ensued, the Speaker suspended the 22 MLAs.
